World War Z: The Art Of The Film

Publisher: Titan Books £7.99
Review By: Jenfi

World War Z: The Art Of The Film from Titan Books is the official illustrated companion to the movie. It features hundreds of amazing pieces of production art, design sketches and storyboards. Accompanying this is the full script from the movie. It follows Gerry Lane (played by Brad Pitt) as he struggles to keep himself and his family alive during the outbreak of a Zombie pandemic. It is packed with a wealth of information that details some of the in-depth thought that has gone into the creation of the movie itself.

It is crammed full of concept art, movie stills, and storyboards, that don’t just cover the epic scenes from the movie. The images of the “Zs” are stunning in their detail, and the book dedicates a whole section to them and shows the detail that has gone into creating this Global Zombie Story. The artwork takes you from the hustle and bustle of Philadelphia to the overcrowded streets of Israel, to the calm and serene, Wales. The beauty of some of the concept art is breathtaking. This book helps you to appreciate the hard work that goes into making such an effective movie. Screenplay enthusiasts will also enjoy this book, and will likely enjoy the action scenes written by Camahan, Goddard, and Lindelof. It is truly gripping stuff a real page-turner. It is beautifully written and gives you enough detail in the script to be able to paint the picture on your mind.

I know that this book is all about the art, but personally, I’d like to have seen more about the zombies themselves, more detail on how they came to be realized for the movie. The most impressive piece in this book helps you appreciate the scale of the zombie crowd scenes. There are a few quotes in the book from the Director and various other movie team members, however, I would have liked to have seen a bit more information about how obstacles were overcome with the logistics of creating some of the larger scale scenes. However, that being said this book contains some of the most visually stunning concept art I have ever seen.

World War Z: The Art of the Film is a must have buy for any fans of the movie or for those who like Zombie or Apocalyptic Artwork.
