The Wrecking Crew; a Matt Helm novel by Donald Hamilton is a spy book like no other. From the moment I opened the book it had me. If you like secret agent novels then this is a breath of fresh air to this genre.

We follow an ex spy who has been out of the game for a while and is brought back in for a mission which fits his skill set. He is retrained and brought up to speed on how the world is different since he last went and did a mission. It is a time of peace now, and everyone is jumping through hoops to keep it that way, a lot different to the war torn world Matt Helm was used to fighting in. This mission sends him undercover as a photographer, and he gets to travel to the wastes of northern Sweden.

The story is well written. Every character you meet feels so real, and what I really liked was how everyone that was part of this story all had their own parts to play. From the get go you were guessing who was doing what. You could be following one person who you really started to enjoy and it turns out that they’re a “bad guy”. The way each chapter is done keeps you on your toes all the time and at some points has you blind-sided with what happens. Many times as I was reading, I had to put the book down and just run what’s just happen through my head. The style of writing is, as I have said above, very well done and is paced really well. You don’t get information overload. What I really liked was, it was written from Matt Helm’s point of view which really helped with the characterization of Matt Helm. Matt Helm is a cool, calm character. Even though he’s not been in the game for a while, I really liked the way you have this head narration going on as he goes along. It really adds another dimension to the character. Another good character whom you will read a lot about is Lou Taylor; again she is a great character, and she balances well against Matt Helm.

If you’re looking for a different take on the secret agent/Spy genre, then you will not go wrong with this. It has it all guns, sex and intrigue. It really was one of those book that I did not know if I was going to enjoy when I first picked it up, but it kept me glued to the pages until the end, and boy what a great end it was. If you are new to the secret agent/Spy novels or even an old hand at this styles. You really can not go wrong with picking up one of these books and giving it a go, you will not be disappointed.
