Starting in Berlin in 1977 you follow a band called one model nation. The band that is slowly becoming a voice for a nation’s youth in communist Russia. They take you on a whirlwind tour of some of the western world visiting London and other places.

The band are chased by the police and the red army faction who rule with an iron fist, so no live gigs or large gathering s of people are allowed. There are riots and explosions which are well depicted by the art work. The book is quite political, but you do get involved with the story and empathise with the characters as you read. I would also be on the freedom fighters side. Sebastian takes you back to his home town where you meet his dad whilst he contemplates weather he is just in his cause and if there fight is worthwhile.

One if the character Balthazar influences the bands choices quite heavily. They find themselves having to get their message out to the media to improve public opinion; you really do want the band to succeed.

It’s very clear how much Courtney Taylor-Taylor loves comics and how much time, blood, sweat and tears have gone into making this novel. I really enjoyed reading the bits at the end, creating one model nation where you find out what has inspired the book and how it evolved to be the published copy. Also you get Jim Ruggs sketch book and few other nice little touches.

A lot of time and thought has gone into producing this book. I have loved every minute of it even though it isn’t usually my cup of tea. As with other novels I’ve read recently you don’t want to give away to many spoilers.

I have actually taken something away with me after this read and that I think is the point, Always fight for what you believe in and never back down. It made me think and realize how much power the written word can have.

The art is again different to other novels I’ve reviewed as its more sketchy style but it does really work incredibly well.

I would very much like to take my hat off to Courtney Taylor-Taylor for a fantastic book that I have reallyloved reading thank you very much.

I am sure if you go out and buy this it will generate some response from you even if it’s not the same as mine I think everyone would take something from it.
